OpenAI has configured GPT-6 Astra with a dedicated legal search index and legal-analysis instructions, and labeled it GPT-6 Astra Law inside Trusted Access in ChatGPT and Codex. That label matters because Trusted Access is the gate that decides which users see which models first, and a named legal variant signals OpenAI is building separate rails for professional and regulated work rather than one general assistant for everyone.

The company's own bench puts GPT-6 Astra Law at 54.0% correctness on 200 Vals AI Legal Research Bench questions, against 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra plus web search. That is a 15.3 point gap on a fixed question set, reported by OpenAI itself rather than by Vals AI or a third party. An API id, gpt-6-astra-law, is described as coming soon, meaning the model is not yet available to developers building outside ChatGPT and Codex. OpenAI did not disclose pricing, rollout timing for the API, or how the 200 questions were selected.

For a lawyer or paralegal, the shift is practical: a model tuned on a legal search index may surface case law faster than a general model doing ad hoc web search, which is the comparison OpenAI chose to publish. For a firm's managing partner, the open question is liability, since a 54% correctness rate still means roughly four in nine answers miss, and nothing in the announcement describes how errors get flagged to a reviewing attorney before a filing goes out.

Policy watchers should treat the benchmark gap as a vendor claim until an independent party reruns it, because OpenAI built both the product and the scorecard. The mechanism behind the gain likely sits in retrieval, a narrower index pulling cleaner sources than open web search, not necessarily in reasoning quality on hard questions. That distinction matters for anyone deciding whether to trust GPT-6 Astra Law on novel legal questions versus routine case lookup, where a narrow index helps most.

Check whether Vals AI publishes its own account of the same 200 questions, and whether the gap holds on a larger or independently drawn set. Check too what happens when the API id ships, since developers embedding gpt-6-astra-law into firm software will want latency, cost, and update-frequency figures OpenAI has not yet released.

Trusted Access now shows GPT-6 Astra Law to eligible ChatGPT and Codex users, while the API version remains listed as coming soon.
